People love fall. The leaves changing color, the cool breezes, pumpkin spice everything... what's not to love? One of the best things about fall, though, is that it signals a new beginning.

The fall autumn equinox is a time to enjoy the crisp weather and colorful leaves. It's a time to wear cozy sweaters and drink warm apple cider. The fall autumn equinox is a time to spend with family and friends, enjoying all that the season has to offer.

Fall occurs when the Earth's axis tilts away from the sun. This tilt causes the sun's rays to hit the Earth at a different angle, which in turn leads to lower temperatures.

The days also become shorter because the Earth is closer to the sun during summer and further away during winter.

In addition to the change in weather, another big part of fall is the change in foliage. Leaves are green because of a pigment called chlorophyll, which helps plants absorb sunlight for photosynthesis.

As fall arrives and days become shorter, plants produce less chlorophyll. This lack of chlorophyll reveals other pigments in leaves, such as orange, yellow, and red.

A chance to start fresh and leave the heat of summer behind. So when is the first day of fall? September 22nd! Here's why...

The Autumnal Equinox

The first day of fall is also known as the autumnal equinox. What does that mean? Equinoxes happen twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. They occur when the sun is directly over the equator, and day and night are of equal length. In other words, when night and day are each 12 hours long. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox marks the start of astronomical autumn.

What does that mean for us here on Earth? Well, for starters, days will start getting shorter and nights will start getting longer. The temperature will also begin to cool down as we head towards winter. So even though it might still feel like summer where you live, the first day of fall is coming! Get excited!

Are you excited for fall? I know I am! There's just something about this time of year that feels magical.

If you're looking for something to do on September 22nd, why not celebrate the first day of fall? Go for a hike and enjoy the changing leaves, or make yourself a cozy cup of apple cider.

However you choose to celebrate, make sure to enjoy this wonderful season!
